Chicago Presbytery DART Responds to Recent Disasters

It is hard to find a day that we don’t hear of new and devastating disasters in our country and abroad.

Please take time to pray and lift up the needs of brothers and sisters in Myanmar, China, Southern and central US states, and southern Illinois. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is the best way to help in Myanmar.

  • Iowa Flooding - The American Red Cross needs Mass Care volunteers for shelters. Anyone interested can go to their website: www.chicagoredcross.org and complete a self-assessment questionnaire. You can also contact volunteer resources at (312) 729-6100. They are always in need of monetary donations. Send check or money order to: send check or money order to:

    Team reservation are being taken through the PDA call center 866-732-6121 for flooding in Eastern Iowa Confirmations and general release forms will be sent at that time.

    Cost: donation to the church (suggested donation $5/person/night)

    Food:
    • Prepare your own; full service kitchen available for cooking and table service
    • Groups may want to consider bringing their own cook
    • Stores and restaurants available for food purchase
    • Cooking and clean-up duties will be shared by the visiting work teams

    Water: available to purchase

    Currently the work is clean up
    • Bring boots
    • Have current tetanus shot
    • Bring work gloves and masks (N95)
    • Some tools will be available but you may bring some if you wish

    Individuals/couples are welcome if they are willing to work with another team.

    Teams will be housed in one of three churches in Cedar Rapids or Iowa City.
    1. St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City, www.saintandrew-ic.org/ will accept intergenerational groups with no age or ratio restrictions
    2. Christ Church Presbyterian in Cedar Rapids; www.christchurchnow.org/ will accept properly chaperoned youth groups (1 to 4 ratio)
    3. Westminster Presbyterian in Cedar Rapids; www.crwpc.org will accept properly chaperoned youth groups (1 to 4 ratio)

    • There will be bunk beds and/or air mattresses at all sites (bring sleeping bags, pillows, etc)
    • There are showers available

    Each team member must have accident insurance (call the PDA National Call Center 866-732-6121) if someone needs insurance. Currently we are taking reservations through the fall 2008, however this project could continue for as long as 2 years.

  • Southern Illinois - Massive Flooding and Destruction
    Contact: First Presbyterian Church of Mount Vernon to set up summer work trips.

  • Develop disaster awareness and preparation for your congregations.
