SERVING FROM THE HEART

Finding Your Gifts and Talents for Service
A church-wide study

Study Groups at Knox Here  |  Study Groups Offsite Here  |  Enroll Here

Serving from the Heart, Knox's church-wide study, begins the week of September 11. Small groups will meet in homes and at church to discuss God’s call upon our lives.

What?
A 6-week study opportunity and sermon series that helps to focus us as a congregation, as God's people. We will ask each other, "What is God calling us to do and be as we go forward?" We will share with each other our personal questions and insights about God's call to each of us.

September 11 will be an important day of remembrance as well as a day to begin our Fall schedule with many gathering activities.

Who?
Christ still calls us today. We are called to discover how we are equipped to be servant leaders in the midst of our lives: at home and work, with friends and neighbors, across dividing barriers and then into God's world near and far.

When?
Sign ups are happening now. Start a group yourself! September and October will be devoted to this effort and conclude with a call to serve in Joplin, Missouri.

KICK-OFF EVENTS
September 11 Activities:

  • Sunday morning
The Sunday after Labor Day IS traditionally a “kick off” of Fall programming and Knox Fest; a time to get back into the groove of Fall schedules.

This year takes on special meaning and gives greater meaning to the activities we enjoy and the privileges we share. 10 years ago, September 11th marked a new and difficult era in American history. It seems appropriate that we will kick off our church wide study, “Serving from the Heart” that day as we remember so many who did just that.
  • Sunday school begins
  • Knox Fest
Don’t miss out on the fun! Bounce House, Obstacle Course, Carnival Games, Activities, Face Painting and Picnic Lunch. Fun for All Ages! 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

9/11 REMEMBRANCES
Naperville Interfaith Community Service of Remembrance, 5:00 p.m., Wentz Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave., North Central College & the Amphitheater at Riverwalk Park. The purpose is not only to remember the tragic consequences of the terrorist attacks of 9/11 but to build a community of compassion in Naperville by promoting tolerance and understanding.

4:00 p.m. Family Art Projects: North Central College’s Wentz Concert Hall foyer. Participate in hands-on activities for the entire family that promote tolerance and compassion.

5:00 p.m. Community Gathering: A program including music, readings, and reflections representing many different beliefs that take us through Remembering, Releasing the Past, and Renewing our commitment to a compassionate future.

6:00 p.m. Community Walk for Compassion: Walk from the Wentz Concert Hall to the amphitheater at Riverwalk Park for closing songs, readings and meditations.

This event is being planned by the One Naperville Project and the Naperville Interfaith Leadership Association (NILA). For more information contact Rev. Lynn Pries at 630-697-1942 or media@onenaperville.org.

Knox has travelled near and far to offer assistance in response to disasters: New Orleans and Mississippi, Iowa and Haiti. This summer we have seen flooding and tornadoes devastate communities south and north of us.  Joplin, Missouri, was especially hard hit, loosing lives, schools, a hospital complex, hundreds of homes and woodlands.

We are going to learn more about the intricacies of rebuilding after a disaster by chronicling and participating in the recovery efforts this Fall. Jeneane Ryan, who was born and raised in Joplin, will help us do this via our website. Read it here.

Small groups have been formed that meet both at the church and outside the church.  A complete listing can be found in the Commons.  To enroll in a Serving from the Heart small group online, please email Frank Mayer.  Please include your name, phone number, and which day and time you would prefer.  We will do our best to find you just the right spot.
